IT'S NOT A COPY ! !
By Jim Goolsby.......... "To be or not to be." Or when is a copy a copy? Nine years ago when I 'discovered' the CJ-6A and fell in love with the airplane, I was told incorrectly that the CJ-6A was a copy of the Yak 18A. It was a popular fable of the time. Even my export shipping paperwork from China had it listed as "CJ-6A/Yak18A". But these two airplanes are very different in design and their actual histories reveal that. I'm going to try to straighten out some of you diehards.

The Yak-52 Story
Following the exchange of letters held between the governments of Romania and USSR on July 15, it was decided to manufacture the Yak-52 in Romania in large series. It was decided the investment in a new plant, intended to be used exclusively for the series production of Yak-52. Here, in what was later called FCAv- Fabrica de Avioane Usoare (Light Airplanes Factory) in Bacau, the Romanian prototype (s/n 780102) was finished and rolled out on April 28,1978.

The Great YAK Adventure of 1997
At this point all I knew about YAKs was that some had four legs and others had air brakes. I started studying up on the way that things worked and the flying characteristics of the Soviet designed trainer. I didn't realize it at the time but I should have studied Russian as well because all of the instruments (except the altimeter in the front cockpit) were the originals with Russian markings

The Russian Federation Air Force Museum
The Russian Federation Air Force Museum at Monino, Russia is located approximately 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Moscow along the Gorky Highway in a lovely wooded area. It is the largest and best aviation museum in Russia. The facility was an operational air base from 1932 through April, 1956. The museum was founded at the original airfield location and in the original airfield structures in 1958 and was opened in 1960. It was formerly known as The USSR Air Force Museum.

THE SADLER PIRAHNA
If I ever get into homebuilding or designing my own aircraft then this is what I will pattern my design after. One difference is I would use a 750 Cubic inch Donovan Aluminum block engine tweaked to put out near one horse per cubic inch. AHHHH! The stuff of dreams. Too bad they don't offer a kit for this plane. It's one of the few designs that would have made me look to something other than a YAK-52.
